Last week, UNC system president Tom Ross was inaugurated in his native Greensboro at NC A&T. During his speech he reflected on what possessed him to leave a job he loved and take on this position during a time of financial crisis. During my short nine-month tenure as UNC President, we've already allocated over $400 million in new permanent budget cuts, dealt with the aftermath of a hurricane, experienced an earthquake, for heaven's sake, and faced more than our share of controversial and contentious issuesand we have done so always in the public eye.
