New LGBTQA affinity group launched

The Alumni Association works with groups of alumni with shared interests — such as Greek organizations, athletics, specific majors, etc. Now they are working with a new group — the UNCG LGBTQA affinity group.

The group is a network of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or allied alumni that seeks to support the developing efforts of LGBTQA initiatives at UNCG, while connecting with each other and LGBTQ students currently enrolled.

In the coming year, the group hopes to sponsor forums and lectures, offer social networking opportunities and regular communications and hold special events during Homecoming.

“We hope to increase the visibility and awareness of the contributions made by LGBTQA students and alumni to the greater UNCG community,” the group's mission statement notes.

In one of its first meetings, the group considered the following questions:

• What do we need as LGBTQA people in the larger Piedmont Triad area? Outside of NC?
• What would have been most helpful to you as a student/what was helpful to you as a student?
• What do you need now in your lives?
• Do you have the support and resources?
• Where can we make the connections?
• How do we reach out to other alumni?
• How can we support LGBTQ students?
• What are help and volunteer opportunities?
• What does membership look like?
