The business of art

The words “entrepreneurship” and “arts” aren't typically seen together. Unless you're at UNCG.

UNCG's annual Southern Entrepreneurship in the Arts Conference is designed to help students and creative professionals develop the entrepreneurial skills they need to succeed in a life in the arts.

The all-day conference will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, in Elliott University Center. This year's keynote speaker is Beverly McIver, a contemporary artist and Suntrust Endowed Chair Professor of Art at North Carolina Central University. The luncheon speaker is Jim Dodson, author and editor of the O.Henry and PineStraw magazines.

Breakout sessions include topics such as:

• “Running a creative business: How to avoid hitting the panic button” with Joe Solér
• “Your novel: From yellow legal pad to published book” with Michael Parker, Kathy Piores, Megan Fishmann
• “400 seconds: Five visual artists share their success stories in short presentations” with Mario Gallucci, Jim Paulsen, Dave Thomas, Leigh Maddox, Jim Barnhill
• “Creating creative publics” with George Scheer
• “Getting known: Creating promotion and awareness for the visual artist” with Xandra Eden
• “Building a professional practice” with Gwynne Rukenbrod
• “Making a living as an actor through a non-profit” with Charlie & Ruth Jones
• “Making music for a lifetime” with Woody Faulkner
• “It's my pitch party” with Darell Hunt
• “Marketing, finance and and legal advice for creative businesses” with Adam Tarleton, Sue Sassman, Ryan Whitehurst

The conference is sponsored and supported by Opportunity Greensboro, a collaboration of all seven Greensboro colleges and universities.
