Summer 2008

Bhutan bound

Two generations ago, the picturesque Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan had few roads, a handful of telephones, a smattering of schools and was virtually isolated from the rest of the world due to its intimidating geography and government policies. Today the Kingdom, which sits between China and India, is slowly opening its doors to the outside world. Read more about how UNCG professors are helping to map the country.

At Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan, are (l-r) Jigme Nidup, Pankaj Thapa, Kezer, UNCG undergraduate Leanne Sulewski, Dr. Susan Walcott, Dr. L. Joe Morgan, Sangay Dorji and UNCG graduate student Mayur Gosai. Below are Tashi Dorji and Jamyang Choda, lecturers.

All eyes on Asia

The world may be shrinking, but UNCG's focus is growing. This fall, UNCG will introduce an Asian Studies major for students in International and Global Studies (IGS). Read more about the new degree.

Olympic art

As you watch the Olympics this year, think about Billy Lee. “Vessels,” a sculpture by Lee, professor of art, was accepted for inclusion in the Olympic Fine Arts 2008. Read more about Lee's sculpture.

Beyond basic science and math

This fall, two College departments are exploring new fields with doctorates in medicinal biochemistry and computational mathematics. Read more about these doctorates.
