Using the template - PC Instructions

Part I: Save the PowerPoint template from the web to the desktop:

  1. Click on the desired template and select “Save” (in MS Internet Explorer), or "Save to Disk" and then "OK" (in Firefox).
  2. In the “Save In” dropdown menu box at the top, select “Desktop.”
  3. Click “Save” to download the file to the desktop.
  4. Double-click the desktop template to open.

Part II - Create a PowerPoint "design template" from the saved document:

  1. Open the saved file from the desktop by double-clicking on it. PowerPoint will launch and open the file.
  2. In PowerPoint, open the “File” drop-down menu and select “Save As.”
  3. Choose “Design Template” from the “Save As Type” field in the bottom of the "Save" window. The “Save In” field at the top will then read “Templates.”
  4. Click “Save.”
  5. Drag the original downloaded PowerPoint file from the desktop to the “Recycle Bin” (trash) to prevent accidental changes to the format.

Part III - Use the "design template" in a new or existing PowerPoint presentation:

  • To use the "design template" in a new (blank) presentation:
    1. In PowerPoint, select "File" from the menu and then select "New...".
    2. In the “New Presentation” menu on the right, select “On My Computer” under the “Templates” header.
    3. Select the appropriate saved template under the “General” tab.
    4. In future uses, the template can usually be accessed from the “Recently Used” area near the bottom of the “File” drop-down menu instead of “On My Computer.”

  • To use the new design template in an existing presentation:
    1. Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
    2. On the menu bar under "Format", choose "Slide Design...". If not already open, the task bar pane will open to the right of your slide window. (If you already have the "Slide Design" pane open in the task bar with "color schemes" or "animation schemes" displayed, click "Design Templates" at the top).
    3. In the task pane for "Slide Design", under "Apply a Design Template", do one of the following:
      • To apply the design template to all slides and the slide master, click the template you want.
      • To apply a template to a single slide, select the thumbnail on the "Slides" tab; in the task pane, point to the template and click the arrow, and then click "Apply to Selected Slides".
      • To apply a template to multiple selected slides, select the thumbnails on the "Slides" tab, and in the task pane, click the template.

Note: Design templates you have applied appear in the "Slide Design" task pane under "Used in this presentation". All available design templates appear under "Available for use".
