Two professors
in the UNCG Department of Geography have published
an introductory text on human geography.
Professor Dr. Gordon Bennett and Department Head Dr.
Jeffrey C. Patton have published “Applied Human
Geography,” an introductory text for the discipline.
“Basically, this book looks at four major topics
in human or cultural geography,” Bennett said.
“It looks at population, political geography,
economic geography and settlements, which for much
of the world consists of urban geography.”
The book, published in January by Kendall/Hunt Publishing
Co., is the sixth edition of the text and has been
used in other university’s geography departments,
as well as at UNCG. Patton worked on the illustrations
and maps, while Bennett worked on much of the text
and lessons that make up the book.
During the more than five years since the last edition,
there have been so many changes in the world, Bennett
said, that they needed to create this newest, updated
edition.
“There are always changes in the names of countries
or disputes about what countries are named –
for example the leader of Burma prefers the country
to be called Myanmar,” Bennett said. “Then
there have been all sorts of revolutions and wars
– in Iraq, in Sudan and there have been all
sorts of changes in Africa.”
