Winter Ashes Feb. 24-26

The UNCG Department of Dance and John Gamble Dance Theater will present “Winter Ashes” Feb. 24-26.

Performances of this collaborative work by three UNCG faculty artists will begin at 8:00 p.m. each evening in the UNCG Dance Theatre located on Walker Avenue and Kenilworth Street. Tickets are $12, $9 and $6.

“Winter Ashes” features direction and choreography by John Gamble, music by Mark Engebretson and digital projections by Amy Lixl-Purcell and Gamble. This multimedia presentation explores human passions that persist in the 21st century America. A cast of 36 UNCG students and professional dancers, actors and musicians will execute this dark and brooding one-hour performance dedicated to the peaceful resolution of all conflicts in the Middle East.

Gamble has been a professor of dance at UNCG for 20 years and is artistic director of John Gamble Dance Theatre, which has produced his work regionally and internationally since 1979. Gamble’s works combine vibrant choreography with other media.

Engebretson, assistant professor of composition and electronic music at UNCG, originally composed the music for “Winter Ashes” for the Vienna Saxophone Quartet. His idea to compose a large-scale work for saxophones, electronics and video had not been realized until this unique performance.

Lixl-Purcell is an associate professor of art at UNCG and teaches digital design. An inter-media artist who works primarily with physical and virtual installations, her work includes sound, video, photography and sculptural elements.

Please note that this performance is intended for mature adult audiences and contains scenes with nudity.

Free parking for the event is located at the corner of Aycock and Walker Avenue and a parking deck is available on Walker Avenue for an hourly fee. For more information or to reserve tickets, contact the university box office at (336) 334-4849.
