The campus
community and the public are invited to meet outside
the Alumni House at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, for a
ceremonial stroll down College Avenue and across the
new bridge that runs through Peabody Park to the School
of Music.
The College Avenue improvements and the bridge will
allow students to cut across the campus from Spring
Garden Street to Market Street in about 5 minutes.
The Peabody Park work will help preserve this environmentally
sensitive area.
“We want everyone to help put the new bridge
into use and to help us belatedly dedicate the College
Avenue streetscape,” said Chancellor Patricia
A. Sullivan. “The bridge is a beautiful addition
to the campus, and we’re glad it’s finally
finished for the campus community to enjoy.”
The event should last about 20 minutes, including
the walk down College Avenue and a ribbon-cutting.
It harks back to 1999, when students and faculty then
held a ceremonial march from the School of Music’s
old home on Tate Street to the new building on Market
Street.
Funded by the N.C. Higher Education Bonds, the $7.5
million project has updated utilities and made the
campus more pedestrian friendly.
