Leonard
Slatkin, one of the world’s foremost conductors,
will direct the UNCG orchestra in a special rehearsal
Tuesday, March 15.
Music director
of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington,
D.C., Slatkin will work with the students from 2 to
3:15 p.m., in Room 111 of the School of Music. His
visit to campus is part of the National Symphony's
North Carolina residency. That evening, he will conduct
the National Symphony Orchestra at War Memorial Auditorium
at 7:30.
“Leonard Slatkin is one of the world’s
leading conductors and is one of the best known American
conductors since Leonard Bernstein. Having him conduct
a rehearsal with our orchestra will be not only a
thrill for the students, but will be a tremendous
learning opportunity,” said Dr. David Nelson,
associate dean of the UNCG School of Music.
On March 14, NSO musicians will offer a woodwind clinic
to UNCG students, as well as master classes for flute,
stringed bass and clarinet.
Slatkin has directed the NSO for nine seasons. A recipient
of the National Medal of the Arts, he has made regular
appearances with major international orchestras and
opera companies, including the New York and Berlin
Philharmonics, Cleveland Orchestra, and Amsterdam
Concertgebouw, as well as the Metropolitan Opera and
the Vienna Staatsoper. Slatkin's discography includes
more than 100 recordings, which have earned five Grammy
Awards and more than 50 other Grammy nominations.
He has also educated audiences on musical topics through
several broadcast endeavors. During his career he
has had his own radio and television programs, and
has been a guest commentator on National Public Radio’s
“Performance Today.”
