
The exhibit includes this 4-inch-tall ivory
figure
of Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of
mercy,
seated on a lotus.
Chinese
artifacts collected by alumna Lelia Judson Tuttle
are on display at UNCG’s
Jackson Library through July 29.
Tuttle, a resident of Caldwell County, graduated in
1900 from the State Normal and Industrial College,
now UNCG. She first went to China in 1910 as the chair
of English literature at the McTyeire Institute in
Shanghai.
She stayed in China in several capacities until 1942,
when World War II made it necessary for her to come
home. She died in 1967.
The exhibit features items from the late 19th and
early 20th centuries and is displayed in three glass
cases - each about 2 feet wide, 2 feet long and 6
feet tall - in the library’s first-floor lobby.
The library’s regular hours are 7:30 a.m.-midnight
Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10
p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m.-midnight Sunday.
During spring break, the library will be open 7:30
a.m.-5 p.m. March 4, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. March 5, 1 p.m.-5
p.m. March 6, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. March 7-10, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
