Mary Hummel
UNCG has named Mary L. Hummel director of housing and residence life, effective July 11.
Since 1997, Hummel has served as associate director of university housing and director of residence education at the University of Michigan, assisting in overseeing a 10,000-student residence system that utilizes 800 employees and a $90 million budget. She also served as interim co-director of university housing at Michigan. She holds a PhD from Michigan (1990) and master’s (1980) and bachelor’s (1979) degrees from Pennsylvania State University.
As director, Hummel will oversee all aspects of the 23 buildings that house approximately 3,900 students at UNCG. Her major responsibilities will include: occupancy management, building improvements, technology, educational programming, learning communities and student conduct; managing the operating budget for housing and residence life; developing and implementing improvement strategies; determining departmental policy and procedures.
As part of her work, Hummel will help oversee the university’s newest housing project, the 170,000 square-foot, 400-student residence hall currently under construction at the corner of Spring Garden and Aycock streets.
