‘The Country Club’ Begins June 8 at Summer Rep

By Kimberly Hardin, University Relations

Douglas Carter Beane’s “The Country Club” provides a fresh, comic look at a wealthy, cliquish group of friends stuck in adolescence despite the fact that they are grown adults.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Summer Repertory Theatre will present “The Country Club” at 8 p.m. June 8 to 11, 21 and 24 in Taylor Theatre, 450 Tate St.

Soos, recently divorced, returns from California for a weekend trip at home with her old friends in Wyomissing, Pa. Soos, five of her friends and an outcast, Chloe, celebrate 11 holidays throughout the course of a year in the local country club’s “cub” room. Under the characters’ wealthy veneers, these country club children reveal their desires and jealousies and hide their personal secrets. Therefore, frolicking, rivalry, huddling and betrayal prevent the holiday gatherings from going exactly as planned.

“As a society, we are fascinated by these people,” said Jody Cauthen, marketing director for UNCG Summer Rep. The play is a social satire that comments on how the rich live and love, she explained. However, “It’s more than just the have and have-nots,” Cauthen assured about the play.

The director, John Gulley, teaches acting and directing at UNCG. Alli Pentland, a junior BFA acting student at UNCG, plays Soos. Emily Vitrano portrays the comedic Froggy and Brandon Thorne plays Zip, Soos’ high school sweetheart. Vitrano and Thorne are both BFA acting students at UNCG.

Tickets for “The Country Club” are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $7 for groups of 10 or more, $5 for UNCG students with ID, $6 for non-UNCG students with ID, and $5 for children younger than 10. A flex pass for $30 entitles the buyer to four tickets that can be used at any show or shows. A discounted flex pass price of $20 is available to UNCG faculty and staff.

Performances contain adult situations and content. Free parking for evening and weekend performances is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum. For more information call the Summer Rep Box Office at (336) 334-4392 or visit www.uncg.edu/the.

“The Country Club” is part of UNCG’s Summer Repertory Theatre, which will also include: “Fuddy Meers” June 1 to 4, 20 and 23; “The Shape of Things” June 15 to 18, 22 and 25; and “Here There Be Dragons” on June 18 and 25 and June 21 to 24.
