Students, Faculty & Staff Receive Year-End Awards

Faculty, staff and students at UNCG received awards for excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service during the institution’s Excellence Day on May 4. The award winners are:

Faculty and staff honors
Staff Excellence Awards – Carole Lindsey-Potter, office manager with the Women’s and Gender Studies Program; Julian Cheek, costume shop supervisor with the Department of Theatre.
Alumni Teaching Excellence Awards – Dr. K. Porter Aichele, professor, Department of Art; Karen A. Poole, lecturer, Department of Exercise and Sport Science.
Research Excellence Awards – Dr. Prashant Palvia, professor, Department of Information Systems Operations Management; Dr. Sandra Shultz, assistant professor, Department of Exercise and Sport Science.
Gladys Strawn Bullard Awards for Service – Mary Hardenbergh, registration services coordinator in the Registrar’s Office; student Cana Gyongos of Cary; Dr. Charles Tisdale, associate professor, Department of English.
UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching – Dr. Colleen Kriger, associate professor, Department of History.

Graduate student awards
Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards – James Smisek, School of Music; Michelle Johnson, College of Arts and Sciences; Bradley van Eeden-Moorefield, School of Human Environmental Sciences; and Cindra Kamphoff, School of Health and Human Performance.
Outstanding Dissertation Award – Dr. Nicholas Crawford, Ph.D. in English, dissertation topic: “Legitimacy and Subjectivity in English Renaissance Drama.”
Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award – Glenn Perkins, history, thesis topic: “Accommodating Strangers: Mid-Nineteenth-Century Wilmington, N.C., Boardinghouses.”
George and Beatrice Goldman Fisher Gerontology Dissertation Prize – Dr. Sonja “Yvette” Murphy, Ph.D. degree in human development and family studies.
George and Beatrice Goldman Fisher Gerontology Thesis Prize – Tamara Adams, M.S. degree in gerontology.

Student Excellence Awards
Only juniors and seniors can receive Student Excellence Awards. The students were chosen from approximately 5,000 UNCG juniors and seniors and are nominated by their academic departments. Nominees for the awards must have overall grade point averages of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Listed with their academic majors and hometowns, winners are:
