Political
science students at UNCG and at High Point University
will get the insider’s perspective of national
politics March 21-23, when two former congressmen
visit campus.
Earl Hutto (D-Florida) and William Zeliff Jr. (R-New
Hampshire) both served in Congress in the 1990s, and
will speak about their experiences and the challenges
of public service to students and faculty. Their visit
will also include a free, public presentation, “Leadership
in Public Service: Two Insider Perspectives,”
on March 22. Hutto and Zeliff will speak at 7:30 p.m.
in the auditorium of Weatherspoon Art Museum.
The Congress to Campus program is an effort by the
Stennis Center for Public Service “to encourage
students to consider careers in public service and
to provide firsthand knowledge about the work of Congress.”
The Congress to Campus program’s visit to UNCG
is cosponsored by the Center for Legislative Studies
and the Center for Excellence in Government in Washington,
DC.
After an early career in radio and television, Hutto
was elected to the Florida House of Representatives
in 1972. He served three terms at the state level,
and then was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives
in 1978. During his term, Hutto, a Navy veteran, was
assigned to the Armed Services Committee and the Merchant
Marine and Fisheries Committee, and elected chairman
of the Coast Guard and Navigation Subcommittee. After
16 years, he retired in 1995.
Zeliff is a founding partner of Zeliff, Ireland and
Associates, a government relations and marketing firm.
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives
in 1990 and retired in 1997. During his tenure, he
served as Deputy Whip and as part of the House Government
Reform Committee and the Transportation Committee.
He was elected chairman of the Subcommittee on National
Security, International Affairs and Criminal Justice.
Zeliff is the author of the “A to Z Budget Cutting
