Beginning Sept. 16, UNCG Theatre presents “The Trojan Women,” a thought-provoking meditation on war’s cost for the victor as well as the vanquished.

After the fall of Troy to the Greek army, the Trojan women face the devastation of war – lost homes, families and honor – and prepare to be taken away as Greek slaves. The play premiered in 415 B.C.

“Euripides shows us that in war no one wins,” said Director Marsha Paludan. “Yet he also honors the invincibility of the human spirit. We see the possibility of choosing life even in death.”

Performances are at 8 p.m. Sept. 16-17, 23-24; 2 p.m. Sept. 18 and 25; and 7 p.m. Sept. 20-22 in Brown Building Theatre.

Kasendra Bell designed the sets; Erin Dougherty designed the lighting; and Laura Brignull designed the costumes. The actors are Alison Pentland, Emily Covington and Tim Boissey.

Writing in 1938 as Hitler invaded Poland, playwright Eugene O’Neill pointed to Euripides’ play as the most potent statement on the “cruelty, folly and futility of war” in all of European literature.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for groups of 10 or more, $5 for UNCG students with ID.

Free parking for evening and weekend performances is available behind the Weatherspoon Art Museum. For more information call the University Box Office at (336) 334-4849 or visit www.uncg.edu/the.

Upcoming UNCG Theatre performances include “Urinetown: the Musical” Sept. 28-Oct. 2, Oct. 4-6; “Firebugs” Oct. 28-30, Nov. 1-6; “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” Nov. 12-13, 15-20; and Flannel Shorts Nov. 30-Dec. 3.
