The UNCG School of Nursing named Stephanie Metzger the winner of the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award at an April 4 ceremony in the university’s alumni house.
Metzger, a 1984 Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduate, went on to receive a competitive nursing internship with the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va. She also received her Master of Science in Nursing and her post-masters certificate in pediatric nursing. Since graduating from UNCG, Metzger has practiced in numerous pediatric areas, including neonatal ICU, pediatric ICU and outpatient pediatrics.
“All in all, I have tried to remain true to the profession of nursing, always practicing at the bedside as a staff nurse, no matter what my position or title happens to be,” Metzger said. “Bedside nursing is my true passion. This is where I love practicing the art of nursing.”
Metzger is currently a nurse practitioner at Chester Pediatrics and with the Henrico County School Board. She has taught in both the graduate and undergraduate programs at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Nursing, also in Richmond. She has authored grant proposals, book chapters, various other publications, and has presented at numerous conferences, including the International Conference on Spina Bifida in Verona, Italy.
The keynote speaker for the event was 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Jean Burgess Sellers. Sellers, who received her BSN in 1998 and her MSN in 2001, is clinical director for Home Health and Hospice at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City. In 2003, she was among 26 cyclists across the country who were part of Lance Armstrong’s bike tour to raise awareness of clinical trials for cancer patients.
