A new certificate program will help students with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines develop a strong background in Spanish.
This fall, the Department of Romance Languages will offer a 15-hour post-baccalaureate certificate in advanced Spanish language and Hispanic cultural studies. The program is designed to increase students’ language skills in Spanish to a high level; to prepare qualified candidates for cross-cultural professions; and to prepare community college, four-year college or university Spanish instructors. Applicants to other degree programs may apply simultaneously to the advanced Spanish certificate program for no additional fee.
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized accredited college or university and must have earned at least a B average (3.0 GPA) in the undergraduate major and in any upper-level coursework in Spanish. Applicants must also demonstrate an “intermediate high” proficiency in Spanish by having completed a minimum of 21 semester hours above the 204 level, by passing a personal interview with faculty or by making acceptable scores on an officially recognized test.
Applicants must submit the following to the Graduate School: a completed application form, a $45 nonrefundable application fee, two official transcripts from each college or university attended, three letters of recommendation and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (taken within the last five years).
Applicants should submit the following to the director of graduate studies (Spanish) in the Department of Romance Languages: a 500-word essay in Spanish describing their professional goals and motivation for pursuing graduate work in the certificate, a 3- to 5-minute unscripted tape in Spanish introducing themselves and describing their academic or equivalent preparation to pursue advanced proficiency in Spanish and a 5- to 10-page sample of professional or academic analytical writing in English or Spanish
The department will consider applications as they are received. The fall application deadline is July 1.
