New Students Arrive Aug. 9 at UNCG; Classes Start Aug. 14

Student moves into campus residence hall

UNCG staff members help students as they move into campus residence halls.

UNCG will start its 115th year Wednesday, Aug. 9, when new freshmen and transfer students arrive for fall semester.

Classes begin Monday, Aug. 14, with the annual Fall Kickoff festival taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along College Avenue. UNCG is expecting another large freshman class but official figures aren’t available yet.

Students can enjoy two new classroom buildings, the Maud F. Gatewood Studio Arts Building and the Humanities and Research Administration Building, into which faculty moved over the summer. Both buildings are funded through N.C Higher Education Bonds. Spring Garden Apartments, UNCG’s first new residence hall since the opening of Tower Village in 1993, will house 400 students in its apartment-style units.

The Lloyd International Honors College, which combines UNCG’s venerable Honors Program with broad new study options and international experiences, welcomes its first freshman class. New graduate degree programs at UNCG this fall include the Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.) and the new master’s degree in Women’s & Gender Studies.

Among campus construction projects, major renovations will start this fall for Aycock Auditorium, Petty Science Building, McNutt Building and the Brown Building. Phase II of the Gove Student Health Center’s renovation is on schedule for completion second semester.
Big events include:

• Wednesday, Aug. 9 – Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan will give her State of the Campus address at 9:30 a.m., followed by the faculty convocation from 10:30-11:45 a.m., both in Cone Ballroom of Elliott University Center. Lunch for faculty and staff will follow in the Dining Hall.

• Move-In Days, Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 9-12 – Specific move-in days are scheduled for residence halls to minimize congestion. For details, check the Housing & Residence Life “Move-In Central” website at http://hrl.uncg.edu/services/halls/move-in/.

• Thursday, Aug. 10 – Orientation for all new faculty members, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., State Room, University Dining Hall second floor.

• Friday-Friday, Aug. 11-18 – Orientation activities during Spartan Welcome Weekend and a week’s worth of activities for new and returning students. More details are available at the Orientation Office website at http://orientation.uncg.edu/programs/welcomeweek/.

• Sunday, Aug. 13 – The Chancellor’s Convocation for new students will be at 4 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium. Charlie’s Lawn Party will follow at 5 p.m. on the west lawn of Elliott University Center.

• Monday, Aug. 14 – Classes start at 8 a.m. UNCG is expecting another large freshman class. No official figures are available at this time.
• Monday, Aug. 14 – The annual Fall Kickoff carnival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along College Avenue.

• Wednesday, Aug. 23 – A part-time job fair for students and Triad employers will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. in Cone Ballroom of Elliott University Center.

• Thursday, Aug. 31 – The UNCG Board of Trustees will hold its first meeting of the year.
