Heed the Maskmaker’s Message at UNCG Sept. 12

By , University Relations

Faust in mask

Maskmaker Robert Faust brings his one-man show to UNCG  Sept. 12.

Just call Robert Faust the “Man of a Thousand Masks.”

Faust, founder of Toronto’s Faustwork Mask Theatre, brings his one-man show to UNCG Sept. 12.

The show, “The Mask Messenger,” begins at 8 p.m. in UNCG’s Elliott University Center Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

“Messenger” combines monologue, physical comedy and theatre, exploring the artistic, cultural and psychological use of masks. Faust dons masks throughout a series of vignettes, portraying almost 20 different characters.

The New York Times called Faust’s performance “lovely and unpretentious” and “hilariously hyperbolic.”

Veteran newsman Mike Wallace said the show is “Funny, offbeat and totally unique. I’ve never seen anything like it and neither have you. It’s simply stunning.”

Faust, a New Orleans native, started Faustwork in 1983. He designs and makes all of the masks used in his performances. His sculptures and masks are seen in galleries, and have been commissioned by the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, Momix, the Pilobolous Dance Theater and Harvard University.

In addition to “The Mask Messenger,” Faust has created three other shows – “Cello Man,” “Voice of the Wood” and “Little Big Frog.” The Lloyd International Honors College and the College of Arts and Sciences are sponsoring his performance at UNCG.

For more information about the performance, contact Dr. Robert Hansen, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, at (336) 334-5481 or rchansen@uncg.edu.
