The Latina Dance Project will bring an Aztec legend to life with a two-night performance at UNCG.
“Coyolxauhqui ReMembers” will be performed at 8 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 in the UNCG Dance Theatre at Walker Avenue and Kenilworth Street. A matinee is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Sept. 9. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $9 for seniors, children and non-UNCG students. UNCG student tickets are $6.
“Coyolxauhqui ReMembers” is a collaborative project of the Latina Dance Project that reinterprets the Aztec myth of the moon goddess Coyolxauhqui. In Aztec legend, Coyolxauhqui feared that something evil was growing in her mother’s pregnant womb and attempted to kill her mother, the earth goddess Coatlicue.
The child, Huitzilopochtli, sprang from Coatlicue’s womb as a grown warrior and murdered Coyolxauhqui, tossing her remains into the sky, where she became the phases of the moon.
The Latina Dance Project is a group of artists that includes associate professor of dance Eluza Santos of UNCG, Licia Perea of California, Juanita Suárez of New York, and Eva Tessler of Arizona. LDP explores the cultures of Brazil, Mexico and the United States through dance performance, scholarship and research.

The LDP re-interprets the myth as a story of violence against women and empowerment through action.
The performance will revolve around the stories of four women: Coyolxauhqui as a young woman haunted by her dreams, a Brazilian professional woman experiencing conflict over her self-empowerment, an immigrant who reassembles herself through plastic surgery and fashion, and a young Mexican factory worker who is one of the more than 300 Juárez women murdered in the last decade along the U.S.-Mexican border.
The piece is directed by José García Davis with choreography by Perea, Santos, Suárez and Tessler. Funding and support came from the UNCG Department of Dance, International Programs through the Kohler Fund, North Carolina Dance Alliance, the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro and the North Carolina Arts Council.
