Professor Teaches Reconciliation

By , University Relations

Students studying communications, community and civil rights have a new text: a 600-page report on a 1979 shooting in Greensboro that left five members of the Communist Workers Party dead.

The report, issued in May, was produced by the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Assistant professor of communication studies Spoma Jovanovic has added the report to the curriculum for her class.

The use of the report at area colleges has attracted local, state and national media attention. Jovanovic and a faculty member at Guilford College were interviewed Aug. 23 by WUNC, a public radio station based in Chapel Hill.

“We are constantly in the struggle to take strong, deep academic concepts and philosophy and make them real for students,” Jovanovic told the radio station. “Well, here in Greensboro, we have a very real situation that created a tremendous amount of tension in 1979 that frankly has lingered.

“This report is calling us as a community to talk about those things in ways that perhaps could lead to some positive results. To have students involved in that process, to read the report, to see the reaction of the community, to be a part of that reaction, is a very powerful moment.”

The radio interview followed a story in the Greensboro News & Record. A version of that News & Record story ran in the Washington Post.
