Spring Garden Apartments.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Spring Garden Apartments, UNCG’s newest residence hall, has won the Best of Residential Building Award given by Southeast Construction Magazine.

The award honors the best construction and design efforts completed between Sept. 1, 2005 and Sept. 1, 2006 in the four-state region of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

The five-story, 240,000-square-foot facility is the first public/private partnership building in which UNCG has participated. The 400-bed facility was built by Barton Malow Construction Company, in conjunction with Little and Associates Architectural Firm and Place Properties.

In order to complete the project on an aggressive 12-month schedule, contractors worked a seven-day-a-week, two-shift schedule for the duration of the construction.

Site obstacles that had to be addressed included soil conditions and an underground spring. In August, students moved into the new apartments, which consist of bedrooms, living areas and full-size kitchens. An underground parking deck can accomodate 200 cars.

As the newest living option on campus, Spring Garden Apartments will be dedicated on Jan. 19 by Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan. The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. and tours will follow.
