GREENSBORO, N.C. – Gateway University Research Park has a new name, a new board of directors, and a 20-year, $250 million master plan.
When fully developed, the joint project of UNCG and N.C. A&T State University will create a $50 million annual economic impact in the Triad. Detailed plans for the research park will be announced in January 2007.
A newly expanded, 16-member board of directors has been installed to lead the project. Its members are Edward Kitchen, chair; Dr. Lily Kelly-Radford, vice chair; Dennis Stearns, secretary/treasurer; Dr. Janice Brewington; Barbara Demarest; Dr. Lloyd Hackley; Denny Kelly; Lee McAllister; Gwyn Riddick; Ralph Shelton; Mac Sims; Thomas Sloan; Dr. Patricia A. Sullivan; Dr. Gerald Truesdale; Dr. A. Edward Uprichard; and John Merrill, ex officio.
UNCG Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan said, “The Gateway University Research Park provides the universities with the opportunity to expand our research work, attract and retain talent and stimulate partnerships with business and industry. I see the park as a magnet for the Triad to attract knowledge-intensive companies to commercialize the work of university researchers."
Lloyd Hackley, chancellor of N.C. A&T, said, “At long last, this community recognizes the power it has right here at its feet. We’re going to be able to help the Triad develop economically in biotechnology, nanotechnology, agricultural activity and renewable energy."
GURP is a not-for-profit entity created to manage and operate the collaboration between UNCG and N.C A&T for research and economic development in the Triad. GURP will attract and retain educational, corporate and community service agencies which advance scientific and educational research.
