How do working mothers navigate their career and breastfeeding? How do breastfeeding and feminism work together? What are community and employer responsibilities with regard to mothers and breast feeding? These are just some of the questions that UNCG will tackle with a day-long symposium on feminism and breastfeeding.
“Breastfeeding and Feminism: A focus on the working mother” will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 24 in the Alumni House on College Ave. The program is sponsored by the Women’s and Gender Studies program and the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness. Registration, including lunch, is $20. RSVP by March 20.
Sponsored by the Linda Arnold Carlisle Professorship, speakers for the program include numerous experts in feminism and breastfeeding. The two keynote speakers are Dr. Jacqueline Wolf of the Department of Social Medicine at Ohio University and Chris Mulford, co-coordinator of the Women and Work Task Force of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action. All told, about 20 speakers will take part in the program, including Dr. Paige Hall Smith, director of the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness; Miriam Labbok, formerly of UNICEF; Mary Rose Tully, director of lactation services at Women’s and Children’s Hospitals of UNC Hospitals; and Barbara Carder, director of Lactation Services at High Point Regional Hospital.
