An MFA student at UNCG will combine everything from Benny Goodman to Chilean poetry to digital imagery in her thesis concert.
Talani Torres, a graduate student in the Department of Dance, will present her MFA concert “Still Moving” at 8 p.m. Feb. 24 and 25 in the Dance Theatre. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors and students and $5 for UNCG students. Click here for a map of campus.
The program consists of six works choreographed by Torres:
• “Traces,” performed by Amy Beasley, is set to music by Keith Jarret with still images and manipulated video projections.
• “Fracture,” performed by UNCG students and alumna Janna Blum, is set to music by Yo-Yo Ma.
• “Everyone’s Olivia,” is an exploration of identity through shifting positions featuring a poem by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.
• “Aeon,” performed by five UNCG students and alumna Janna Blum, is set to haunting music.
• “Starting with Soma” was inspired by the study of somatic practices, mainly Kinetic Awareness or “ball work.” The movement phrases emerged from a workshop with non-dancers who improvised on balls. Video images are projected on hanging sheets.
• “Pan Pan Vino Vino!” features an ensemble cast and Benny Goodman’s Sing Sing Sing.
The concert is the culmination of Torres’ work as a graduate student at UNCG. Before coming to UNCG, she received her undergraduate degree from Florida International University and went on to become a performer, teacher and choreographer in Miami. She was owner of Dance Space, a dance school in Miami, performed with Miami Movement Dance Company and acted as artistic director of the Miami Children’s Dance Ensemble.
