Jewish Studies Professor to Deliver Lecture Feb. 2

Marc Bregman will speak Feb. 2.

The newest religious studies professors at UNCG will deliver a lecture on one of Judaism’s oldest stories.

Dr. Marc Bregman, the Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies, will deliver an illustrated slide lecture entitled “Envisioning the Sacrifice of Isaac” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Elliott University Center Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

The topic of the lecture, Bregman said, is how early Jewish, creative interpretation – an originally oral tradition preserved in Rabbinic literature – is reflected in graphic representations of the Biblical story, not only in Jewish, but also Christian art.

“What’s being depicted in Christian art is sometimes the interpretive idea expressed in early Jewish understanding of the story,” Bregman said. “Ultimately, I want to suggest that this early Jewish interpretation can be considered an art form; but the canvas – so to speak – of this art form was the mind’s eye.”

Bregman came to the university this semester. He holds an undergraduate degree in Jewish studies from the University of California at Berkley, a master’s degree from Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles and a doctorate from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has taught and served fellowships at a number of colleges and universities, including Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Washington at Seattle and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
