Joe Morrissey, Gretchen Ferris and Kyle Payne star in 'The Foreigner' Feb. 3-12.

“The Foreigner,” opening at UNCG’s Brown Building Theatre Feb. 3, depicts the comedy that ensues when a group of eccentric Southern characters interact with a stranger who (they think) knows no English.

Show times are 8 p.m. Feb. 3, 4, 10 and 11; 2 p.m. Feb. 5 and 12; and 7 p.m. Feb. 7, 8 and 9. Ticket prices are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors, students and children (12 and under); and $8 for UNCG alumni and groups of 10 or more.

Playwright Larry Shue’s farce, first performed in 1983, has won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production.

Bill Raulerson directs the UNCG Theatre production. Jenn Baker is scene designer, Melissa Guyer is costume designer, and Laura Brignull is lighting designer. Raulerson and the three designers are all graduate students.

“A no-where man overcomes his fears, defeats his nemesis and gets the girl, all without speaking his native tongue,” Raulerson said. In addition to being hilarious, the play keeps alive the “bright star” of Shue, who died in 1985, he said.
