Students begin moving into the new Spring Garden Street Apartments August 11.
Students will begin moving into the new Spring Garden Street Apartments at UNCG August 11.
The $27 million, 251,000-square-foot complex at Spring Garden and Aycock streets is the first new residence hall to go up on campus since Tower Village opened in 1993. The UNCG campus is somewhat landlocked, with only 210 acres and more than 16,000 students expected this fall.
Bruce Michaels, UNCG’s assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, said the university surveyed students to find out what amenities they’d like to see in new halls.
The number one request? “Storage, storage, storage,” Michaels said.
Students also asked for numerous electrical outlets, double beds and more privacy.
Little Diversified of Raleigh designed the five-story complex, which holds 402 residents. The building is the first residence hall at UNCG to be modeled on an apartment building.
Apartments have large private bedrooms, bathrooms shared by no more than two residents, a living room and fully-equipped kitchens. Underneath the building is a parking deck with 200 spaces, also a first for residence halls at UNCG.
The new apartments feature amenities not seen in typical dorms.
Other highlights include:
•Mailboxes for residents in the main lobby
•A two-story retail space run by UNCG’s Dining Services
•Two outdoor courtyards
•Double instead of single beds for students
•A central laundry facility with online access to check availability of washers and dryers
Apartment units include 94 four-bedroom student suites, 11 two-bedroom apartments and three one-bedroom guest apartments. A two-bedroom staff apartment will house a full-time coordinator for residential living, who will live on the premises.
UNCG’s Office of Housing and Residence Life paid for construction of the new hall through student rent generated by the housing program.
The hall was finished by a private developer who then turned it over to the university – a first for the UNCG campus. UNCG partnered with Place Properties of Atlanta to complete the 109-unit building.
Michaels said working through a private developer meant a speedier building process.
