A perfect rating from the U.S. Department of Education has earned UNCG a $286,902 federal grant to fund special support services for an extra year.
The extension grant -- a continuation of a four-year, $1,024,782 Department of Education grant initially awarded in 2002 -- is intended to increase retention and graduation rates for low-income, first-generation and disabled students during the 2006-2007 academic year.
UNCG’s Special Support Services program currently ranks in the top ten percent of like programs in the nation according to Department of Education standards and earned the maximum number of points possible during the initial grant application process, said John Foreman, director of the university’s Student Success Center. A total of 972 special support services programs currently exist nationwide.
“This grant provides students with a wonderful opportunity to build academic skills here at UNCG, to find success and move on to graduation,” Foreman said.
The program currently serves 200 students.
