Cather is regarded as one of the first feminist American writers. “O Pioneers!” is the story of Alexandra Bergson, the daughter of Swedish immigrants who takes over the family farm after her father’s death and falls under the spell of the rich, forbidding Nebraska prairie. She overcomes the trials of working in a man’s world, turning the land into a productive farm only to sacrifice her personal needs and desires.
Director Tom Humphrey, head of UNCG’s theatre department, and his writing partner, Richard Kuhlman, adapted Cather’s novel for the stage using innovative narrative theatre ensemble and acting techniques. This workshop production marks the first stage in developing the play and work on the adaptation will continue.
“O Pioneers!” will be the last theatrical piece performed in the Brown Building Theatre before the facility closes for renovations.
