Shades of Color Conference March 16

The eighth annual Shades of Color Conference will be held at UNCG March 16.

“Standing on Common Ground” will begin at 4 p.m. in Elliott University Center. Free registration is required. Co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office of Disability Services, the purpose of the conference is to provide opportunities for dialogue and community interaction around diverse issues facing today’s society. The schedule for this year’s conference includes:

• 4:00 p.m. Welcome
• 4:15 p.m. “Beyond the Surface,” workshop on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) issues led by Brad Johnson. The event focuses on GLBTQ individuals’ culture, the challenges they face and what one can do to understand them.
• 4:45 p.m. “No Longer Sitting Indian Style: Best Practices for Native Americans,” a workshop led by Symphony McDaniel focusing on information for North Carolina educators who are interested in exploring issues of American Indians in higher education.
• 5:15 p.m. “Stop the Hate,” a workshop led by members of the UNCG Stop the Hate group. Stop the Hate provides information related to hate incidents and ways to prevent hate crimes.
• 5:45 p.m. CommUNITY Dinner. Reservations required by March 13 for dinner.
• 7:00 p.m. “A Slice of Rice, Frijoles and Greens – A Journey Through A Multicultural American Experience,” a collage of stories, vignettes and original music that takes the audience on a journey into the Asian, Latino, African and deaf American communities.
