Tim Bucknall.
Tim Bucknall, assistant director of UNCG Libraries, has been honored as one of The Library Journal’s 49 “Movers & Shakers” of 2006.
He was selected for his significant contributions and innovations relating to ejournals, databases and web interfaces, and for building partnerships among libraries throughout the state and region.
He founded the Carolina Consortium, an alliance of academic libraries that uses its collective buying power to negotiate lower prices for electronic resources.
In 2005, the consortium’s 60 colleges and universities in North Carolina and South Carolina spent $4 million to buy access to online materials that otherwise would have cost $84 million.
Bucknall also led the development of Journal Finder, a search engine for the more than 34,000 scholarly journals, newspapers, and magazines that UNCG’s libraries provide access to in print or electronic form.
UNCG has shared Journal Finder with other institutions, and now more than two dozen other colleges and universities in five states use it for their own periodicals collections.
In addition to being assistant director of UNCG Libraries, he is the head of the University Libraries’ Electronic Resources and Information Technologies (ERIT) unit, which is widely recognized for its leadership and innovation. Many products and electronic services developed by ERIT have been subsequently copied and adopted by other libraries world-wide.
Tim earned master’s degrees in art history and library and information science at UNC – Chapel Hill, and a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the University of Texas at Austin. He has worked in UNCG’s Jackson Library since 1994.
