Three Students Win Fulbright Scholarships

By , University Relations

Three UNCG students have won prestigious Fulbright scholarships to pursue research abroad – a record number of Fulbright winners for the university.

UNCG’s 2006-2007 Fulbright scholars are:

•Caitlin Elizabeth Cornwell of Greensboro is graduating with a degree in theatre. Cornwell will research Canada’s Theatre of the Oppressed.

•Dionne Cherise Griffiths of Louisville, Ky., is graduating with a master’s degree in choreography. Griffiths will study dance and perform with professional dance companies in Trinidad and Tobago to explore how Afro-Caribbean dance has influenced the development of contemporary modern dance in those countries.

•Lauren Michael Oliver of Greensboro graduated in 2005 with a double major in media studies and French. Oliver will produce a feature-length documentary about Francis-Alfred Moerman, a European guitarist and composer of jazz and classical music.

Cynthia Patricia Blanco, English and linguistics and Spanish, of High Point was selected as an alternate.

This year nine UNCG students applied for Fulbrights. Six were selected as finalists.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s premier scholarship program, enabling American students to pursue study and research in over 100 participating countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Scholarships typically are for one year. The Fulbright Student Program is aimed at recent university graduates and graduate students at the master’s or doctoral level. Grantees plan their own program of study, which may involve university course work or independent study. The program is open to all fields of study, including music, art, the social or life sciences or a combination.
