The UNCG School of Nursing honored outstanding graduates at its awards ceremony on May 11.
The awards ceremony included the Alumni Association, Community Nursing, Dean’s Recognition, Faculty Excellence, Leadership, and Sigma Theta Tau awards. The awards recognized students receiving the bachelor’s of science in nursing (BSN) as well as the master’s of science in nursing (MSN).
Alumni Association Award
• Katie Jackson, of Greensboro, award to a master’s student
• Margaret “Peggy” Hewitt, of Madison, award to a bachelor’s student.
The award is given to one bachelor’s student and one master’s student with a GPA of at least 3.0 who has also demonstrated leadership skills, professional and interpersonal skills and a positive outreach into the community.
Community Nursing Award
• Susan Hedrick, of Burlington.
The Community Nursing Award is presented to an undergraduate student who has made a significant achievement in leadership and community in general and in the School of Nursing in particular, in promoting a greater appreciation of persons from the various races, ethnic backgrounds and cultures served by the nursing profession.
Dean’s Recognition Award
• Deborah Crater, of Greensboro, MSN award
• Margaret “Peggy” Hewitt, of Madison, BSN award
The Dean’s Recognition Award is presented to students who demonstrate excellence in nursing care, academic achievement, commitment to advanced practice, and the qualities of integrity, maturity, industry, a sense of humor, intellectual curiosity and the desire for professional growth.
Faculty Excellence Award
• Holly Clark, of Clemmons
The Faculty Excellence Award is given by the faculty to a graduating senior who exemplifies the highest level of achievement in nursing practice. This award to the Faculty's belief in the chosen senior's potential for accomplishing excellence in the advancement and practice of professional nursing.
The Leadership Award
• Tonica Johnson, of Greensboro, BSN recipient.
• Ashley Leak, of Mebane, MSN recipient.
The school has two awards that recognize leadership: one given to a bachelor’s student and one to a master’s student. The award goes to a student who demonstrates leadership, integrity, self-confidence, professionalism, an ability to work with others, and an apparent interest in the welfare of the School of Nursing and its students.
The Sigma Theta Tau Award for Excellence
• MSN Award for Excellence:
Tamika Anderson, of Lexington
Candace Harrington, of Statesville
• BSN Excellence Award for a pre-licensure student: Tracie Rowe, of Jamestown.
The Sigma Theta Tau is an international honor society of nursing that honors three graduates every year. The Gamma Zeta Chapter is the local chapter of the society.
