Four UNCG Students Win Competitive State Internships

By , University Relations

Four UNCG students have won competitive summer internships to work in state agencies.

The students were among 80 selected this year for the North Carolina State Government Internship Program from an applicant pool of 600 North Carolina undergraduate, graduate and law students.

Selected for summer internships are:

•Charles Bowen, political science and classical studies major, of Greensboro, will work as an unauthorized substance tax enforcement agent with the Unauthorized Substances Tax Office in Greensboro.

•Kelly Hicks, African American studies and anthropology major, of Greensboro, will work as a junior interpreter program coordinator at the Stagville Historic Site in Durham.

•Georgina Perez, social work graduate student, of Greensboro, will work as an agricultural health and safety educator with the Occupational Safety and Health Office in Raleigh.

•Johanna Wolf, elementary and special education major, of Wendell, will work as a history camp assistant instructor with the Museum of History in Raleigh.

The internship program is coordinated by the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office. The N.C. Internship Council oversees the selection process.

UNCG’s Career Services Center hosted a presentation by the internship coordinator to make students aware of opportunities and the application deadline. The center also assisted student applicants with resume and cover letter development, as well as preparation for the required interview.

Interns are paid $8.25 per hour. They will work full-time in their assigned internships from May 30-Aug. 4.

The summer internship program began in 1970 and is in its 36th year. The number of applicants rose to 600 this year from 440 last year.
