UNCG Presents Student Leadership Awards

By , University Relations

Scholarship awards for student leadership and service were presented recently at the annual student activities banquet.

The awards and the recipients were:

• Charles Bowen Jr., political science and classical studies major, of Elizabeth City received the James H. Allen Student Leader Scholarship Award of $1,000. The honor goes to a rising senior who has distinguished himself or herself as a leader during the first three years at UNCG. The award is named for James H. Allen, who was vice chancellor for student affairs at UNCG from 1973-1996. The fund was created by Allen’s friends and family in recognition of his service to the institution.

• Kathryn Russo, history major, of Charlotte and Katherine Mariategui, sociology major, of Hillsborough received the Georgia Cooper Moore Service Leadership Awards, and received $1,000 each. The award is named in memory of Georgia C. Moore, who attended the State Normal and Industrial College (now UNCG). The honor goes to a rising senior who is selected on the basis of solid academic performance and meritorious service to UNCG. The fund was created by her son, Beverly C. Moore.

• Katrina Massey, psychology major, of Mebane received the Pamela A. Wilson Scholarship of $660. The award honors the late Pam Wilson, who was director of Multicultural Affairs at UNCG until her untimely death in March 2002. The honor goes to a student who has mentored fellow students or members of the greater community, and who has demonstrated consistent interest and involvement in community-based service.
