GREENSBORO, NC - UNCG is pitching in to help the displaced students of Eastern Guilford High School, which was destroyed by a fire on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
The next day, Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan told the Board of Trustees that UNCG had reached out to the school system.
“Early this morning, I asked if they would like to use our facilities” at the North Campus of the Greensboro Center for Innovative Development, she said. “After all, it was a former school. We’re going to be as helpful as we can."
The Guilford Country School Board took her up on the offer. On Friday, board members voted to send Eastern Guilford freshmen and sophomores to that site off Highway 29 North beginning Nov. 14. The location was formerly the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf, and is now being jointly developed as a millennial campus with N.C. A&T State University.
Jeff Belton, who is manager of the UNCG warehouse and a Guilford School Board candidate, said that the school needs cash and school supplies, primarily.
UNCG people wishing to make cash donations, Belton said, should make checks out to: Eastern Guilford High School, c/o Guilford County Schools Administrative Offices, 712 N. Eugene Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
UNCG assistance activities are being coordinated on campus by the Office of Leadership and Service Learning, (336) 256-0538.

Chancellor Sullivan sent the following to UNCG faculty and staff on Friday:
Dear Colleagues:
Losing a school is so much more than losing a building. Teachers and students at Eastern Guilford High have lost books, lesson plans, backpacks, personal belongings, and memories. The Guilford Education Alliance is supporting efforts to raise funds to help the faculty and students. There are two ways you can help.
• Make a contribution for a specific teacher’s needs though the web site, www.guilfordeducationalliance.org, and click on the DonorsChoose North Carolina logo. DonorsChoose has agreed to fast-track proposals from Eastern Guilford High teachers and get them onto the website as soon as they can. Check back from time-to-time for new proposals.
• Make a credit card contribution through the Education Alliance that will go to the Eastern High School emergency fund for supplies, materials, and other items needed. Go to the web site, www.guilfordeducationalliance.org, and click on: “Click here to make a cash donation.”
In addition to your own support, please send this email to any distribution list you have of friends, colleagues, or others. Thank you so much for your help and generosity!
Patricia A. Sullivan
