GREENSBORO, NC – Fred Chappell, emeritus professor of English at UNCG, was recently inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame.
Chappell was honored Nov. 10 in Durham, along with poet Gerald Barrax and late journalist Elizabeth Daniels Squire. UNC-TV’s “Bookwatch” host D.G. Martin was master of ceremonies.
Chappell earned a bachelor’s degree in fiction writing and later a master’s degree from Duke University. He taught English at UNCG from 1964 until his retirement in 2004. He was North Carolina’s Poet Laureate from 1997-2002.
Chappell has authored more than 40 books of poetry, fiction and essays. He has previously won, among other honors, Yale University Library’s Bollingen Prize in Poetry, France’s Prix de Meilluer des Livres Etrangers and the T.S. Eliot Prize.
Inaugurated in 1996, the N.C. Literary Hall of Fame is located at the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities in Southern Pines. It is a program of the North Carolina Writers’ Network in cooperation with the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities.
