Singer, dancer and actor Chita Rivera, who burst onto Broadway in the original production of the classic musical “West Side Story,” will present a cabaret show featuring highlights from her remarkable career on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m.
The performance will take place at the historic Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro.
Born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero in Washington, D.C., Rivera studied ballet before making her professional debut as a 17 year-old dancer in the touring production of “Call Me Madame.” Following her breakout role as Anita in “West Side Story” in 1957, Rivera went on to star in such seminal Broadway musicals as “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Sweet Charity,” “Kiss Me, Kate,” “Threepenny Opera” and “Chicago.”
Rivera received two Tony awards and eight nominations, including one for her scene-stealing role in the musical “Nine.” In 2002, she became the first female Hispanic to receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors award recognizing her contributions to U.S. culture.
Rivera has been a guest star on televisions shows such as “Will and Grace.”
The performance is part of the University Concert/Lecture series, a year-long schedule of eclectic events sponsored by UNCG.
Tickets are $34, $29 and $24. Seniors, children under 12 and students receive $2 discount. UNCG student tickets are $9, $8 and $6.
