Waffiyah White in yellow, Ashley Ortiz in blue, and Alex Marshall-Brown in red are three bands of the rainbow in UNCG Theatre's latest production.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG Theatre’s production of Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” runs Oct. 18-22, offering an intense blend of drama, poetry and dance.
Tom Humphrey, head of UNCG’s theater department, is co-directing the play with Robin Gee, an assistant professor in the university’s dance department.
“It’s not a play that has a standard structure or has a storyline consistent throughout,” Humphrey said. “It’s a series of moments about seven women of color. Each piece stands alone and also comments on the next.”
Shange developed the play in the 1970s while she was taking a dance class, referring to it as a “choreo-poem.”
“It’s very movement driven,” Humphrey said.
The UNCG Theatre production will feature a cast of six actresses: Alex Marshall-Brown, Waffiyah White, Ashley Ortiz, Khalisa Williams, Debrita Callaway and Tomeka Allen.
All performances will take place in Taylor Theatre on Tate Street. Show dates and times are: 7 p.m., Oct. 18 and 19; 8 p.m., Oct. 20 and 21; and 2 p.m., Oct. 22.
Tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, students and children; $7 for UNCG students; and $8 for groups and UNCG Alumni Association members.
