Composers to 'Shake It Up!' During Weekend Fest

By , University Relations

Composers residing in the Carolinas will take center stage as part of the New Music Festival to be held Oct. 12-14, at the School of Music at UNCG. This year’s edition of the festival is titled "Shake it Up!"—a reference to the various activities of contemporary music composers.

“Composers have the ability to present their unique, aesthetic viewpoints,” said Dr. Mark Engebretson, assistant professor of composition and the festival’s organizer. “They compose music, of course, but they also interact with performers and audiences, they stage events, they question, they challenge, they present their own aesthetic viewpoints. In short, they shake things up.”

Performers include the UNCG Chamber Winds, Contemporary Chamber Players, percussionists Scott Herring and Michael Haldeman, soprano Wendi Washington-Hunt, clarinetist Christopher Grymes, saxophonist Susan Fancher and the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet.
