Ann Cole and David Harrell play Lady and Lord Macbeth in UNCG Theatre's production of Shakespeare's classic.
Combat, witches, ghostly apparitions, hubris, and the most ruthless woman in the history of literature: UNCG Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” has it all.
“Macbeth” runs Sept. 27-Oct. 5 in the university’s Taylor Theatre. John Gulley, a professor of acting and directing at UNCG, is directing the play, which features a large cast of more than 30 student actors.
Gulley hopes the lessons of “Macbeth,” the dark tale of a Scottish lord and war hero who aspires to become king, will resonate with audiences even if they are unfamiliar with the play. “It’s a play about ambition and about the perils of unbridled ambition, which we’ve seen throughout history,” he said. “Macbeth is an ambitious person with a conscience. Shakespeare makes the play more interesting by making Macbeth more human.”
Gulley said he has given the show a more contemporary setting but one that doesn’t suggest any specific place. “It’s simply a land that was once thriving and technologically advanced, but 50, 60, 70 years of war have destroyed its infrastructure.”
UNCG Theatre students featured in some of the leading roles are: David Harrell as Macbeth, Ann Cole as Lady Macbeth, Brad Brown as Banquo, Zac Campbell as Macduff, Bill Raulerson as King Duncan, and Lindy Flowers, Rene Walek and Emma Reaves as the witches.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 and 28 and Oct. 3, 4 and 5; 8 p.m. on Sept. 29 and 30; and 2 p.m. on Oct. 1. Tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, students and children; $7 for UNCG students; and $8 for groups and UNCG Alumni Association members.
