Jim Wren (l) and Ben Holbrook in 'Our Lady of 121st Street'
GREENSBORO, NC – UNCG Theatre presents the gritty urban drama “Our Lady of 121st Street” April 18-22 and April 26 in Taylor Theatre.
“Our Lady” was written by Stephen Adly Guirgis in 2002. The New York Times has called Guirgis the “best playwright under 40 in America.”
The play centers on a group of old classmates from Harlem who find themselves at Ortiz's Funeral Home to mourn the death of Sister Rose – a feared and beloved nun from their childhoods. When her body mysteriously disappears, they confront their pasts and begin to accept their futures.
“They have to face each other in the present,” says guest director StephanieYankwitt, a 2001 BFA theatre graduate from UNCG who currently works in New York City.
Show times are 7 p.m. April 18, 19 and 26; 8 p.m. April 20 and 21; and 2 p.m. April 22. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and students, $8 for groups of 10 or more and UNCG Alumni Association members and $7 for current UNCG students.
