GREENSBORO, NC – UNCG will hold its 115th commencement on Friday, May 11, at 10 a.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum, with Betty Ray McCain, former secretary of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, as the featured speaker. Her address will be titled "Great Expectations."
UNCG will present degrees at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels, and more than 2,200 students are candidates to complete degrees during second semester. UNCG Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan will lead the ceremony, and Dr. A. Edward Uprichard, who is retiring as Provost on June 30, will take part in his final commencement as UNCG’s chief academic officer.
Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees will be presented to McCain and to two other honorees: E.S. (Jim) Melvin, president of the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation and a former mayor of Greensboro, and Irwin “Ike” Belk of Charlotte, a philanthropist who is the retired president of the Belk Group Inc. retail chain.
In addition to Sullivan, Uprichard and the honorary degree recipients, other participants will include Dr. Anna Marshall-Baker, chair of the Faculty Senate; Thomas Ross, chair of the UNCG Board of Trustees, along with trustees Dr. Kate Barrett, Dr. Karen McNeil-Miller and Dr. Richard L. Moore; Dr. Laura Foxx, representing UNC General Administration; Carol Matney, president of the UNCG Alumni Association; Dr. James Petersen, dean of the Graduate School; and Nicole Steele of Yadkinville, who is the speaker for the Class of 2007.
Also taking part in the ceremonies will be UNCG’s academic deans; mace bearer Dr. Terence Nile and chief marshal Meredith Andrews of Hillsborough. At the conclusion, the University Bell will be rung by Dr. Neill McLeod, an alumna of the Class of 1957, and Jim Hooper of Davidson, Class of 2007 alumni representative, and the tassel-turner will be Clinton Wilson of Greensboro. The Commencement Band and Chorus will provide music.
