Dr. Kevin Lowe
GREENSBORO, NC – Dr. Kevin Lowe, an associate professor of business administration in the Bryan School of Business and Economics, has been named the winner of a 2006-07 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Lowe is one of 16 UNC system faculty members selected for the awards. Each faculty member will receive a bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize held at the ceremony in conjunction with the board’s May 11 meeting in Chapel Hill.
The UNC Board of Governors established the awards in 1994 to “underscore the importance of teaching and to encourage, identify, recognize and reward good teaching within the University.” The awards are given annually, with one going to a faculty member from each of the 16 UNC campuses.
“It is always an honor and a pleasure when a superior teacher is recognized by their peers and by their students, and Dr. Lowe is a most worthy recipient of this award,” said Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan said. “In addition to his teaching skills, Dr. Lowe is known internationally and within the Triad for his leadership and dedication to furthering the academic mission of the Bryan School and UNCG.”
Creative and innovative teaching that fosters classroom engagement and introduces students to community leadership skills are Lowe’s hallmark. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Business Administration. His research on leadership and cross-cultural management has taken him to academic venues around the globe. During the 2003-04 academic year, Lowe spent six months as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Western Australia. In 1999 and 2006, he received the Teaching Excellence Award from the Bryan School and in 2002, was a finalist for the University Alumni Teaching Excellence Award.
Lowe serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, The Leadership Quarterly and the Southern Journal of Entrepreneurship. At the university level, he represents the Bryan School on the Faculty Senate.
A graduate of the University of Louisville, he holds an MBA with an emphasis in investments from Stetson University and a PhD in organizational behavior from the Chapman Graduate School of Business at Florida International University.
To be eligible for the Board of Governors Teaching Excellence Award, faculty nominees must have earned tenure at their institutions and taught on the campus for at least seven years. The recipient must have demonstrated excellent or exceptional teaching over a sustained period of time. A faculty member can receive the award only once while teaching at any UNC institution. At UNCG, nominees were selected from previous UNCG Alumni Teaching Excellence Award winners.
