GREENSBORO, NC – Poet Fred Chappell, North Carolina’s former poet laureate and professor emeritus at UNCG, will receive the 2007 North Caroliniana Society Award May 15 at the university.
The event begins at 5 p.m. in Elliott University Center with a public address by Chappell. A reception and an awards banquet will follow his speech.
The North Caroliniana Society gives the award for extraordinary contributions to the state’s literary, historical and cultural heritage.
The Society, chartered in 1975, is dedicated to the promotion of increased knowledge and appreciation of North Carolina's heritage. That it accomplishes in a variety of ways: encouragement of scholarly research and writing in and teaching of state and local history; publication of documentary materials, including the numbered, limited-edition “North Caroliniana Society Imprints” and “North Caroliniana Society Keepsakes”; sponsorship of professional and lay conferences, seminars, lectures and exhibitions; commemoration of historic events, including sponsorship of markers and plaques; and through assistance to the North Carolina Collection of the University of North Carolina Library and other cultural organizations.
The event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the UNCG Libraries. Tickets are $50 each, and space is limited, with a May 8 deadline for purchasing tickets. Contact Dr. H.G.
