GREENSBORO, NC – “Scripture Cake,” a film that depicts a “kitchen reunion” of two sides of a family divided by race and miscegenation laws, will be screened on Friday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro.
The film was directed by Dr. Emily Edwards, associate professor of in the Department of Broadcasting and Cinema at UNCG.
The title of the film comes from a dessert found in some southern households. The recipe for a Scripture Cake includes eggs, milk, honey, almonds, figs, raisins and other foods referenced in Biblical verses.
The preparation of a Scripture Cake in the movie refers to a tradition that both parts of a racially divided family share. The shared family tradition helps to dissolve lingering resentment and awkwardness after a generation of bitterness and family strife. As one family member declares in the film, “If we can’t hide the family skeletons, at least we can fatten them up.”
The film is sponsored by UNCG and Piedmont Community College.
Tickets are $10 and $5 for students and include a reception and benefit concert by blues singer Roy Roberts.
Tickets are available at the Carolina Theatre Box Office, (336) 333-2605, www.carolinatheatre.com. For more information, contact Emily Edwards at (336) 334-4135.
