New Faces Leading Departments

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Several departments and an academic program at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro start the 2007-08 academic year with new leaders. All have been approved by the UNCG Board of Trustees.

The new heads are:


• Accounting and Finance – Dr. William O. Brown Jr., an associate professor, came to UNCG in 2006. His areas of expertise include corporate finance and financial economics. He received a PhD in economics from Clemson University.

• Broadcasting and Cinema – Dr. David A. Cook joins UNCG after serving as head of the Film Studies Program at Emory University. Cook is the author of “A History of Narrative Film,” now in its fourth edition, and has authored numerous scholarly articles on contemporary cinema. Cook received a PhD in English from the University of Virginia.

• Communication Sciences and Disorders – Dr. Robert Mayo, formerly associate dean for academic affairs in UNCG’s School of Health and Human Performance, has been named interim department head. Department Head Dr. Celia Hooper is serving as interim dean of the school. Mayo came to UNCG in 2004 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his PhD in speech-language pathology from the University of Memphis.

• Computer Science – Dr. Stephen R. Tate, an expert in computer security and cryptography, comes to UNCG from the University of North Texas where he was the founder and director of the Center for Information and Computer Security and the Computer Privacy and Security Lab. Tate serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Information Assurance and Security. He received a PhD in computer science from Duke University.

• Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations – Dr. Carol Mullen, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, comes to UNCG from the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of South Florida. The author of numerous books and journal articles, she earned her PhD in Educational Curriculum and Teacher Development at the University of Toronto.

• Exercise and Sport Science – Dr. Jennifer Etnier has been named interim department head following the appointment of Department Head Dr. Kathleen Williams as interim associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Health and Human Performance. Etnier, whose research focuses primarily on cognition and aging, joined UNCG in 2004 and earned her PhD from Arizona State University.

• Human Development and Family Studies – Dr. Dan Pearlman comes to UNCG from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he has been a professor since 1983. He was a faculty member at the University of Manitoba from 1970-83 and earned his PhD at Claremont Graduate School. His scholarship focuses on intimate relationships.

• Physics and Astronomy – Dr. Promod Pratap, a biophysicist whose research interests are currently in the physical chemistry of membrane transport proteins. He has been a UNCG faculty member since 1994, and earned his PhD at Syracuse University.


• Religious Studies – Dr. Bill Hart has been named interim department head while Department Head Dr. Derek Krueger is on research leave. Hart’s publications include “Edward W. Said and the Religious Effects of Culture.” He received his PhD from Princeton University.

• Social Work – Dr. Cathryne Schmitz joins UNCG from Radford University, where she was director of the School of Social Work. She was also director of the School of Social Work at the University of Southern Maine. Her research focuses on culture, poverty, oppression and the family. She earned her PhD from Ohio State University.

• Theatre – Jim Fisher, who earned his MFA in Acting/Directing at UNCG, returns to the university from Wabash College where he had taught since 1978. His publications include the book “The Theater of Tony Kushner: Living Past Hope” and bio-bibliographies of Eddie Cantor, Al Jolson and Spencer Tracy.

• Women’s and Gender Studies Program – Dr. Katherine Jamieson is an associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Her areas of expertise include critical pedagogy, social inequalities and experiences of women and Latinas in sport. She received her PhD from Michigan State University.
