From Opera to Tango, School of Music Announces
Concert and Lecture Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Eight lectures and concerts spanning genres from Hawaiian music to the impact of Italian opera on the antebellum south, will be presented as part of the Composition, Theory, and History (CHT) division of the School of Music.


The series debuts on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. with “The Impact of Italian Opera on Music Education in Female Academies and Seminaries in Antebellum America,” a lecture presented by Reeves Shulstad of Salem College that will be held in the Collins Lecture Hall at the School of Music.

All events are free and open to the public and will take place at the School of Music. UNCG students may attend one CHT lecture for recital credit.


Other events include:

• Thursday, Sept. 27: “Musical Interactions between American Whalers and Native Hawaiians at Sea and Ashore in the Nineteenth Century,” presented by Revell Carr, UNCG School of Music. 4 p.m. Collins Lecture Hall.

• Thursday, Oct. 25: Benjamin Broening, University of Richmond. 4 p.m., Collins Lecture Hall.

• Thursday, Nov. 29: “Echoes of Ologies in Music Scholarship.” Lecture by Aaron Allen, UNCG School of Music. 4 p.m., Collins Lecture Hall.

• Friday, Feb. 8: UNCG Faculty Composers Concert. 7:30 p.m., Recital Hall.

• Thursday, Jan. 24: “Wordless Dramas: Character and Action in the Music of Thea Musgrave and Harrison Birtwistle.” Lecture by Philip Rupprecht, Duke University. 4 p.m., Collins Lecture Hall.

• Thursday, Feb. 28: “Understanding Style and Genre: Tango, Piazzolla and the CD Bin.” Lecture by Alejandro Rutty, UNCG School of Music.

• Thursday, March 27: “Academies of Scratch.” Lecture by Mark Katz, UNC Chapel Hill. 4 p.m., Collins Lecture Hall.
