GREENSBORO, N.C. – The mountains, rivers, people, culture and cities and towns of North and South Carolina represent a region of striking natural beauty, rich history and a vibrant and changing economic base that is home to more than 13 million people.
The unique geography of North and South Carolina is profiled in “A Geography of the Carolinas,” a new 266-page book published by Parkway Publishers and edited by Dr. D. Gordon Bennett and Dr. Jeffrey C. Patton, professors in the Department of Geography.
From okra festivals to barrier islands, Yankee and Latino immigrants, abandoned tobacco farms to high-tech centers the 10-chapter book includes information ranging from the changing topography of the Carolinas to the impact of globalization on traditional agricultural products such as tobacco, tobacco, hogs and poultry as well as manufactured items such as furniture and textiles.
The book also contains chapters on the rich cultural geography of the region. The Carolinas are home to more than 900 festivals, including the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games & Gathering of Scottish Clans in Linville, N.C., the second-largest event of its kind in the world, and the Freedom Weekend Aloft in Simpsonville, S.C., one of the nation’s largest hot air balloon festivals.
